![]() By Jac Perry GUAM - Senator Judi Guthertz is inviting President Barack Obama to Guam to attend an important conference regarding Guam’s military buildup. Guthertz has announced her plans to hold the military buildup conference in November.
The conference will include the members of Guthertz' Committee on the Military Buildup, members of Senator Rory Respicio’s Committee on Federal Affairs, and representatives from the University of Guam’s School of Business and Public Administration. Senator Guthertz insists that this conference be held “from the Guam perspective”. The senator maintains there has not been enough focus on the local community in discussions about the buildup. “We have invited President Obama so he may observe the concerns (of) our people from the executive branch, the legislative branch, the judiciary, our youth, our Manamko’, the private business sector and other various groups and all our people. We want to also include an historical account of Guam’s relationship with the military. We want to discuss where we will go from here to ensure all parties benefit from the buildup.” Senator Guthertz added, “If the President cannot attend, we ask that the Vice President attend and if he is unavailable we will ask the Secretary of Defense to come and if he cannot, we ask that the First Lady Michelle Obama attends.” “We want them to hear us speak about our personal concerns as a community.” The conference will be held at the Guam Legislature and will be televised and will stream live via the internet. Viewers may call or send in questions to be a part of the dialogue.
