GUAM - Jalma Manglona, from Rota, has been awarded a Pacific Teacher Scholarship from Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). Manglona received her Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Guam Community College in May 2009. She is currently taking additional courses at GCC and simultaneously working toward her B.A. in Elementary Education at the University of Guam.
"My plan with the scholarship is to use it as I further my education in receiving a B.A. in Elementary Education at UOG," said Manglona. She chose her major because of her passion for working with young children. "I view them being at a stage that is very important with regard to how much knowledge they develop throughout the rest of their educational years. This is the time where they go through many changes and I want to be a part of that change," she said.
Recipients of 2009-2010 PREL scholarships must be students in a teacher preparation program. They receive $750 - $1000 to help pay for tuition and expenses in the academic year. After graduation, they intend to work in schools in their home islands. The annual PREL scholarships were established to increase the number of qualified teachers in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific region.
Other 2009 recipients of the Pacific Teacher Scholarship include Kristine Cruz of the CNMI; Charity Faith Ileyagisiug from Yap; and Albina Riklon and Zin Thomas of the Marshall Islands. Previous recipients of the PREL Pacific Teacher Scholarship include Margarita Mendiola (2008-09) and TJ Ungeni (2007-08), both from Guam.
PREL is an independent, nonprofit corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands, the continental United States, and countries throughout the world. PREL bridges the gap between research, theory, and practice in education and works collaboratively with schools and school systems to provide curriculum development, assessment and evaluation.
