GUAM - In light of recent concerns raised about the Guam Department of Education's (GDOE) procurement activities, Governor Felix P. Camacho sent a letter to GDOE Superintendent Dr. Nerissa Bretania Underwood in agreement to transfer the department's procurement responsibilities to the General Services Agency (GSA) of the Department of Administration.
"I am committed to improving the financial stability of our island's public school system," said Governor Camacho. "This letter symbolizes a concerted effort among the Camacho-Cruz Administration, GDOE, and the Guam Education Policy Board to guarantee that our children of the island's public schools are provided a quality education."
The letter indicates Governor Camacho's ambition to match GDOE's procurement practices to that of the rest of the executive branches of the government of Guam. GSA's first tasks will be an analysis of GDOE's Procurement Department and an audit into the department's procurement processes to identify problem areas. An assessment of GDOE staff's comprehension of Guam's procurement laws will also be completed to ensure consistency, accountability and accuracy of procurement practices for the island's public school system.
Governor Camacho also said he would present to Dr. Underwood a plan of action that GSA will be implementing to resolve procurement operations of the GDOE and its counterparts. The letter also explains that Governor Camacho will assist the GDOE in improving its procurement operations to better provide for the island's school children.
