'Japan Embarked On Wretched, Foolish War' Incoming Foreign Minister Regrets Japan's WWII Aggression By Jeff Marchesseault GUAM - Straight from the lips of Japan's foreign-minister-to-be. High-ranking and outspoken as ever, the Democratic Party's Katsuya Okada is expressing what's coming awfully close to official government regrets about Imperial Japanese aggression during World War II. In language that is foreshadowing an official break with the Liberal Democratic Party's lack of sorrow for Imperial Japan's wartime atrocities committed before the LDP's five-and-a-half-decade postwar rule, here is what Reuters recently said about Okada's pending foreign ministership and what Okada told the news agency himself: Okada's appointment to the top diplomatic post is likely to be welcomed by China and South Korea, given his position that Tokyo should come to grips with its wartime history. "First, Japan itself must properly assess the fact that it embarked on that wretched, foolish war," Okada told Reuters in the interview before the election. "In that sense, our position is quite different from that of successive LDP governments." If by his stance that 'Tokyo should come to grips with its wartime history' he means a series of official apologies for atrocities committed on Japan's occupied innocents by Imperial Japanese forces during the Second World War, then, no doubt, legions of Chamorros on Guam too would welcome that kind of contrition as soon as Tokyo is ready to say it's sorry.
