Guthertz Fights For Animals On-Island, Bordallo Fights For Animals Off-Island By Michael Rudolph GUAM - Our very own congresswoman, Madeline Z. Bordallo, is listed as a member of "a solid group of female legislators who are introducing animal protection bills and showing active leadership to fight for these measures." We contacted Senator Judith Guthertz to have her weigh in on the article (published by the Huffington Post) since she has always been a staunch supporter of animal rights -- as shown by her criticism of Guam Greyhound Park's irresponsible release of unwanted thoroughbred racing dogs. We all remember when these animals were roving the streets of Guam. Senator Guthertz told Guam News Factor that a community's level of humaneness says a lot about its degree of civilization. "I congratulate and thank Congresswoman Bordallo and all women policy makers for their efforts on animal legislation. As you know, the treatment of animals, indeed any species, is indicative of how we function as a society. I am a firm believer that the way one treats animals often reflects their inherent human condition. It doesn't surprise me that women are more passionate, more protective and more caring about the welfare of animals." The article from the Huffington Post goes on to cite a study conducted by researchers at Stanford University and the University of Chicago reasonably surmising that because female women in Congress have often been the underdog, they are more likely to stand up for the underdog. "Over the course of the 110th Congress, female House members scored an average of 68 percent on animal protection, while their male counterparts scored 54 percent." Guthertz's comments are in line with the conclusion of the article which states that "as we see more women elected to public office, too, we can expect to see more public policies that reflect our social values and protect animals from cruelty and abuse." Guam News Factor is proud to have Congresswoman Bordallo fighting for animal rights in Washington while Guthertz is the voice of compassion on Guam for the humane treatment of animals.
