GUAM - High school students enrolled in the Guam Community College secondary or high school Lodging Management Program will be eligible to receive a scholarship for a two-year program that will earn the selected students Associate Degrees in Hospitality Industry Management from GCC. The scholarships are being awarded through the Skål Club of Guam who will select the winners during the "World's Largest Chef's Table," Skål's annual Gala Dinner and Fundraiser on Friday, October 23, at 6 p.m. the Hyatt Regency Guam. GCC's high school Lodging Management Program is affiliated with the American Hotel Lodging Association Education Foundation. The program allows high school students to attend off-island industry competitions and gives them a head start in learning the ropes of the hospitality industry, according to GCC Hospitality Department Chairman, Barry Mead. "We are very grateful to the Skål Club of Guam for giving our students such a wonderful opportunity," said Mead. "With an Associate's Degree in Hospitality Industry Management from GCC, these students will be able to get a job anywhere in the industry." "The scholarship is aimed at encouraging island's youth to continue studying for a career in Tourism and Hospitality and achieve their dreams for a successful future," said Jeffrey Schweizer, Skål Club of Guam president. The scholarships will cover the costs of tuition, books and fees. Skål is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of travel and tourism industry. Its 20,000 members, in 480 clubs throughout 89 nations, are the industry's managers and executives that meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.
