Marine 1st Sgt. Kellum Became A Lawyer...And Frankly Forgot He Was Ever Hurt By Jeff Marchesseault GUAM - He's 89 and still tough as nails. Pauley Kellum was shot twice in the left arm when he and and his Marine buddies were fighting Imperial Japanese during the Battle of Guam. After the first bullet struck, "It wasn't much so I kept on," he told TC Palm, Florida's Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches' online newspaper. But after a second shot hit the same arm, it was time to get out of danger and hang up the gun. TC Palm reports that Kellum still doesn't have full use of his left arm, but he hasn't let that stop him from accomplishing his goals. He came home, got married, and used the GI Bill to go to school and become a lawyer. Since then he has contributed financially to projects like the National World War II Memorial in Washington and the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington National Cemetary. After the war, it seems Kellum never looked back with any regrets. He went right on living his life, settling down with his wife, becoming an international lawyer, and giving back to his country, despite his disability and despite never being officially 'recognized' for his wartime heroism. Guam wasn't the only place he fought as a Marine. According to TC Palm, he also "fought with the Third Marine Division on Bougainville and several other South Pacific Islands before going on to retake Guam from the Japanese." Just recently, Kellum finally received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star that had eluded him for 64 years because of procedural glitches. Perhaps no one could be more deserving.
