In Miami-Dade County Florida, sex-offenders, by law, cannot reside within 2,500 feet of "schools, day-care centers, parks or where other kids congregate." Guam News Factor called the Guam Sex Offender Registry and asked whether the same rules apply here on island. According to the Guam Sex Offender Registry they are unaware of any restrictions similar to Florida's. But, then again, Florida's child protection laws aren't necessarily the best solution for Guam. The residency restriction in the Sunshine State has created a marginalization issue in which registered offenders are literally pushed into the wide-open fringes of society and has called into question whether or not these restrictions are productive. According to an article in the Miami-Herald, sex offenders have established an encampment under the "Julia Tuttle Bridge between Miami and Miami Beach to comply with the law." The article goes on to say that "sex offenders have almost nowhere else to live under a 2,500-foot ban -- except for Miami International Airport." Read the Miami-Herald's "Analyst: Florida's sex-offender restrictions may be flawed" from November 4, 2009.
