(Also, To Help Guam's USO: Attend The Arts Fair This Weekend, Or Run The 5K In December) By Jeff Marchesseault GUAM - The United Service Organizations (USO) is accepting donations to help recovery and restoration efforts at Forth Hood Army Base in Texas. It has horrified the families of the fallen, clenched the nation in a emotional mix of astonishment, bewilderment, indignation and patriotism, grabbed the world's attention, and brought comforting words from our President. The mass shooting at Fort Hood last week has made heroes of survivors, the wounded and the dead. It has also kept Guam's broad community of military families on the alert for news updates on how Fort Hood is restoring order and security, how its inhabitants are coping in the aftermath, and how to help ensure the safety of loved ones. It has been widely reported that no Guam-based Army units were stationed at Fort Hood when the tragedy struck. But a militarily-ingratiated community like Guam, which has hosted U.S. armed forces for the better part of a century and whose uniformed men and women carry on a proud and honored tradition of serving their nation at high rates of enlistment and casualty, cannot help but sit up and take notice when another base community experiences such grave misfortune. Nor can military families who are now stationed at Naval Base Guam or Andersen Air Force Base help but yearn to assist. Through their loved ones' terms of service, these families too may have visited or lived at Fort Hood at one time or another, or may now have friends or family stationed there. Thankfully, the USO is there to comfort those at Fort Hood who need and deserve all the help they can get as the base restores order and strives for some sense of normalcy. The USO is now accepting monetary donations from those who want to support our troops and their families at Fort Hood. To learn more, please read on. Here is an official announcement from the USO on Fort Hood relief efforts, followed by annnouncements about a couple of USO activities on Guam: Let’s Support the Fort Hood Community The Fort Hood community is suffering and this is our opportunity to pull together to help. As the families of the fallen and injured begin the long process of healing, they need our united support now more than ever. Non-profit organizations, businesses and local residents are coming together to help the Fort Hood family through this crisis and the road to recovery. You can help! Donate here. 100% of these funds will go to help the Fort Hood community; guaranteed! We are working with local officials and organizations on base and off to provide whatever assistance is needed. As the needs change, this assistance will change. Right now, we’re running the USO Fort Hood center and two USO Mobile Canteens 24/7 to provide support whenever it’s needed. Free Internet and phones, hot coffee and meals, transportation and hotel rooms for families staying with their wounded soldiers, grief counseling, a quiet place to take a break, a shoulder to cry on, or simply a smile and a hug: we are working closely with the garrison command to ensure that whatever is needed will be available. These needs are great and we are assisting in any way we can. As Robin Crouse, USO Fort Hood's director said, "I'm feeding my soldiers that I feel are on sacred ground right now. We're not gone until they tell us to be gone." Help us by donating now. Remember, every single dollar raised will support the Fort Hood community. Thank you for joining us in this cause. 5th Annual “Run for Our Heroes” On December 12th Matson Sponsors 5K Run/Walk to Benefit Guam USO GUAM - The Guam USO invites all runners and walkers get in a patriotic holiday spirit at the 5th Annual“Run for Our Heroes,” the popular 5K run/walk sponsored by Matson Navigation Company on Saturday, December 12th (show time 5 am; go time 6 am).
