President Drops Poignant Parting Remarks By Jeff Marchesseault GUAM - Heading into discussions with senior U.S. officials on how to resolve the Okinawa-Guam transfer problem, Japan Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada received an awakening reminder of American power and influence from a departing U.S. President. According to Zee News, President Obama remarked before leaving Tokyo for China that Japan's post-war economic miracle was due in part to the security guarantee provided by the U.S. military. Obama is on a whirlwind tour of the Far East. Tokyo was his first stop. Top officials from Japan and the U.S. have convened to discuss alternatives to moving the functions of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa to Camp Schwab, Okinawa. The relocation will enable 8,000 Marines to transfer to Guam and lighten the impact of defense operations on civilian life in Okinawa. America stands steadfastly in favor of this long-agreed-to plan. Since taking power in August, Japan's new government has insisted that the plan, which took 15 years to negotiate and that has been a standing bilateral accord since 2006, isn't good enough. The newly empowered Democratic Party of Japan says other options, including the removal of U.S. forces from Okinawa entirely must be reviewed. The U.S. has not changed its position.
