As 300 Federally-Funded School Personnel Face Furlough
By Jeff Marchesseault GUAM - As Guam Department of Education scrambles to find local money for Direct Instruction, Success For All, and other federal programs, it appears that the school system is preparing to furlough federally funded teachers and others critical to classroom learning...while some 600 locally funded school aides will get to keep their jobs. The Pacific Daily News reports, "The Guam Department of Education is in the process of notifying 300 federally funded employees that they should stop coming to work because the school system does not have money to pay them." Granted, this situation is due to restrictions on the way federal dollars may be spent. And it comes at a time when U.S. DOE is refusing to release federal funding till the local school system hires a third-party financial manager to oversee U.S. grants. While existing federal funds run dry on island, programs must come to a screeching halt till a money manager can be hired. In light of financial mismanagement at the school system and recommendations by a private auditor to cut unnecessary spending, wouldn't this be a good time to start fast-tracking the elimination of locally funded jobs already deemed unnecessary and to close the costly, low-population F.Q. Sanchez Elementary School? We're just saying is all. John Dela Rosa contributed to this report. Read the Pacific Daily News story, "BREAKING NEWS 3:30 p.m. - About 300 Guam DOE employees cannot work because of funding shortfalls", November 19, 2009.
