Cash-Poor Japan Airlines Could Lose Another $500M On New Alliance Bid
By John Dela Rosa GUAM - Even as Continental Airlines is moving forward with its new STAR Alliance partnerships, a move that is anticipated to strengthen Continental's global reach and bottom line, Japan Airlines is fighting a similar battle to do the same. JAL is currently a member of the OneWorld Alliance with American Airlines and British Airways. However, JAL has been in discussions with Delta Airlines to join Delta and Air France – KLM in the SkyTeam alliance. American Airlines has taken the fight public, saying that JAL could stand to risk up to $500 million in revenues as it transitions to a new partnership. And that could put ailing JAL in an even more precarious financial position. Continental, JAL and Delta all fly out of Guam International. Jeff Marchesseault contributed to this report.
