Tough Times For A Fortune 500 Company By Michael Rudolph GUAM – Parent company of the Pacific Daily News and the Honolulu Advertiser Gannett Co. suffers cutbacks at its flagship newspaper service USA Today and additional unpaid furloughs at its 'Community Newspapers,' according to the Associated Press. In addition, "corporate employees at Gannett are also taking the furlough" according to Robert J. Dickey, president of Gannett U.S. Community Publishing. Gannett's USA Today was forced to make the tough decision to close 26 newsroom jobs and 11 positions at the their weekly insert, the USA Weekend Magazine. USA Today's executive editor, John Hillkirk informed his staff that "the economic outlook for 2010 remains weak and the decline in travel has contributed to a recent drop in circulation" as reported by the Associate Press. Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal holds the No.1 position in U.S. Newspaper circulation which recently eclipsed Gannett's USA Today. The Fortune 500 company Gannett was ranked 332nd in 2008 and has fallen 39 ranks to 371st for 2009 (money.cnn.com). Read the Associated Press article on Yahoo! Finance, "New round of cutback coming at Gannett newspapers" from December 1, 2009.
