Lawmaker Still Says Legislature Got A Good Deal

GUAM - Senator Matt Rector's office lease with the Guam Federation of Teachers is unethical. And Attorney Anthony Camacho tells the Committee on Ethics and Standards it should immediately terminate the lease and direct the lawmaker to enter into a new lease.

While Rector says he doesn't think he did anything wrong by signing a lease with the labor union for which he also serves as president, he's not going to fight his colleagues if they opt to nix the agreement.

Sen. Matt Rector: "The people of Guam got a good deal on that lease. Do I believe what I did was unethical? No. But will I bow to wiser heads and legal minds? Yes."

From January through October of last year, the Guam Legislature paid a total of $22,500 for rental space for Rector's senatorial office at GFT in Mangilao. That's $2,500 per month for 800 square feet – or $3.12 per square foot. Rector says that's a good deal. But Guam taxpayers have reportedly been paying the union premium "Tumon-level" commercial rent rates for the Mangilao office.

A real estate agent who wishes to remain anonymous confirmed for Guam News Factor that Mangilao office space generally goes for $1.25 per square foot. At $3.12 per square foot, Rector's senatorial office at GFT has been costing the people of Guam two and a half times more than prevailing Mangilao rates.

Sen. Matt Rector: "The people of Guam got a good deal on that lease."

As the committee entertains other complaint items lodged against Rector, it remains to be seen when or whether the lawmaker will face punishment or have to pay money back to the people of Guam for costs associated with his controversial status as a senator and union chief.
