The Council for Responsible Nutrition is taking action to improve the safety of melatonin supplements, urging manufacturers to add child-deterrent packaging and enhance warning labels. Melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles, has seen a surge in demand in recent years. However, the supplement is not regulated by the FDA, leading to concerns about product safety.
Reports of children accidentally ingesting melatonin have raised alarms, with a significant number of ER visits attributed to such incidents. To address this issue, the Council is recommending safer packaging that will help prevent accidental ingestions by children.
In addition to child-proof containers, the Council is advising manufacturers to include warnings about potential dangers of consuming high levels of melatonin, especially for children. Some melatonin gummies even contain CBD, which is illegal to market in food products.
Guidelines from the Council also suggest cautionary language on labels about drowsiness and the importance of avoiding alcohol while taking melatonin. Manufacturers have been given 24 months to implement these changes to improve product safety.
By taking these steps, the Council hopes to prevent further incidents of accidental melatonin ingestion and promote responsible use of the supplement. Consumers are encouraged to be mindful of the potential risks associated with melatonin and to follow the updated guidelines for safer use.
