A tragic bus crash in South Africa’s Limpopo province has left 45 people dead as they were on their way to an Easter conference at the Zion Christian Church in Moria. The passengers, who were pilgrims traveling from Botswana, were involved in the accident in the Mamatlakala mountain pass. The bus reportedly caught fire after crashing through barriers and plunging off a bridge.
Among the victims was an eight-year-old girl, who miraculously survived the crash and was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Efforts are currently underway to recover the bodies of the deceased passengers, with reports indicating that some bodies are burned beyond recognition and trapped in debris. So far, only 12 bodies have been retrieved from the crash site.
Authorities are making arrangements for some relatives to visit the accident scene and check on the survivor. The South African government has stated its plans to repatriate the bodies to Botswana. Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and President Cyril Ramaphosa have both expressed their condolences to the victims’ families and the government of Botswana in the wake of this tragedy.
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, the community is left in mourning over the devastating loss of life in this Easter tragedy. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance while traveling, especially during busy holiday periods.
