Tragedy Strikes as Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses in Baltimore
In a devastating turn of events, two bodies were recovered from the Patapsco River after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The victims were identified as 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala.
The collapse occurred when a container ship lost power and struck a supporting column, causing the bridge to fall into the water. Construction crew members working on filling potholes were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, leading to a frantic rescue effort.
While two individuals were rescued from the river, one unharmed and the other hospitalized with injuries, four people are still missing and believed to be trapped underwater in vehicles encased in rubble. Among the missing are Miguel Luna from El Salvador and Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval from Honduras.
Father Ako Walker, a Baltimore priest, has been offering support to the families of the victims during this difficult time. Immigrants, who make up a significant portion of construction workers in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metro areas, are likely to be relied upon to help rebuild the Key Bridge.
The community is left in shock and mourning as the search for the missing individuals continues. Updates on the rescue efforts and plans for rebuilding the bridge will be closely monitored in the coming days.
