Title: U.S. Army Flags Shooting Suspect’s Restricted Access to Firearms – An Investigation into the Tragic Events Unfolds

Guam News Factor – In a recent development, the U.S. Army has determined that Robert Card, the suspect in the Maine shooting incident, should not have access to an Army-issued weapon. Card’s mental health evaluation, conducted in mid-July, influenced the decision, subsequently notifying his commanding officer.

Concerns regarding Card’s well-being further prompted the Army to restrict his deployable status. However, it is essential to note that this limitation solely applies to Army-issued weapons and ammunition and does not impact his access to personal firearms.

Following the decision, the U.S. Army Reserve’s surgeon’s office and medical management team diligently attempted to reach out to Card on multiple occasions. In September, Card’s reserve unit requested a health and welfare check to ensure his safety. Regrettably, when the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office carried out the check, Card was not present at his residence.

The Sheriff’s Office promptly contacted Card’s unit commander, who confirmed the non-availability of further weapons from the reserve. Additionally, authorities made contact with Card’s family, who subsequently agreed to secure any firearms he may have access to.

Card’s concerning behavior came to light during his deployment with the Army Reserve Unit in upstate New York over the summer. Reports indicate that his erratic conduct raised concerns for the safety of those around him, prompting his unit to request law enforcement intervention.

Following this plea, New York State Police officers transported Card to Keller Army Community Hospital for immediate medical evaluation. Allegations of Card threatening fellow soldiers with violence further drove authorities to take this course of action.

Unfortunately, Maine Governor Janet Mills delivered heartbreaking news, confirming that Card was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While investigations continue into the circumstances leading up to the tragic incident, this development raises critical questions about the handling of mental health concerns within the military.

As we await further details from ongoing investigations, experts emphasize the necessity of prioritizing mental health evaluations and support mechanisms for service members. Events such as these underscore the significance of timely intervention, ensuring the well-being of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving our country.

Serving as a somber reminder, this case sheds light on the importance of ongoing efforts to identify and address mental health challenges, ensuring the safety of both military personnel and the wider community they serve.
