In a recent news conference, Haiti’s notorious gang leader, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue,” issued a warning to any international armed force making its way into Haiti. Chérizier, who leads the powerful G9 Family and Allies gang, threatened to fight against foreign troops if they engaged in any abusive activities. The menace comes as Haiti struggles to combat powerful gangs that have seized control of nearly 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry has been advocating for the deployment of international armed forces to help tackle the escalating gang violence. This initiative seeks to restore law and order in a country increasingly plagued by criminal activities and rampant corruption. Kenya had earlier volunteered to lead a multinational force, and the United States has announced plans to propose a non-UN multinational mission.
Chérizier, however, clarified that he would welcome any foreign force that took decisive action against corrupt politicians and local police who engage in illegal arms sales. He also voiced his support for the apprehension of the prime minister. Nevertheless, Chérizier cautioned that the Haitian people would fiercely resist any international force that mirrored the misdeeds of previous UN peacekeepers, such as sexual abuses and the introduction of cholera into water sources.
The United Nations remained silent on Chérizier’s remarks, declining to provide any comments regarding the gang leader’s warning. Chérizier further revealed that his group was no longer at odds with G-Pep, another prominent faction in Haiti. He urged the Ministry of Education to reopen schools in slums that have been shuttered due to ongoing conflicts between rival gangs, which have resulted in a surge of rape and murder cases.
Addressing journalists in Port-au-Prince, Chérizier made his statements alongside members of G9, who concealed handguns during the press conference. The menacing display emphasized Chérizier’s influence and dominance in a country fraught with violence and political instability.
As Haiti grapples with escalating gang warfare and deteriorating security, the demands for international intervention rise. Nevertheless, the situation remains delicate, with concerns over potential abuses and the need for accountability for corrupt officials. The country’s future hangs in the balance, as it seeks to regain stability and ensure the safety of its citizens.
