Virginia Faces Deadly Outbreak of Meningococcal Disease: 5 Deaths Reported
Virginia has been hit by a concerning outbreak of meningococcal disease, with dozens of cases and at least five fatalities reported. This widespread bacterial infection, which can cause meningitis or sepsis, is preventable through vaccination. However, over the past year, Virginia has experienced an alarming surge in severe cases.
Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis, which can invade different parts of the body and lead to life-threatening illnesses. In Virginia, the outbreak has primarily been instigated by group Y bacteria, with 27 cases reported since June 2022.
