NASA Announces New Associate Administrator to Lead Exploration Programs
Guam News Factor – In a recent announcement, NASA has revealed that Jim Free, the head of NASA exploration programs, will be assuming the role of the agency’s next associate administrator. Free will be replacing Bob Cabana, who recently announced his retirement from NASA.
The position of associate administrator holds significant importance within NASA, as it is the third highest position in the agency and marks the highest civil service role. As associate administrator, Free will serve as a senior adviser to the administrator and deputy administrator. Additionally, he will oversee the leaders of the agency’s mission directorates and field centers, playing a vital role in NASA’s strategic decision-making processes.
Jim Free’s return to NASA in 2021 came after a successful career in the private sector. Prior to his current appointment, he held the prestigious position of director of the Glenn Research Center. With his wealth of experience and expertise, Free is expected to make significant contributions in his new role as associate administrator.
Meanwhile, Bob Cabana, who held the position of associate administrator since 2021, served as the director of the Kennedy Space Center for over a decade. Cabana, an esteemed astronaut who flew on four shuttle missions, including commanding the STS-88 mission, expressed his gratitude for his career at NASA and his contributions to the space industry.
In a seamless transition plan, Catherine Koerner, Free’s deputy, will succeed him as the associate administrator for exploration systems development. Koerner has been in her current role since last March, making her well-prepared for her new responsibilities. Her dedication and knowledge in the field make her an excellent choice to continue driving exploration systems development forward.
As NASA continues its ambitious exploration programs, the appointment of Jim Free as the new associate administrator marks a significant milestone. With his leadership and expertise, Free will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of NASA and its space exploration endeavors. We wish him the best of luck in his new position, along with the successful career journey of Bob Cabana and the upcoming accomplishments of Catherine Koerner.
