Director Craig Gillespie, known for his work on the critically acclaimed film “I, Tonya,” is in talks to direct the upcoming “Supergirl” film titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” at Warner Bros.’ DC Studios. The film is based on the popular DC comics run of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely and is set to begin shooting later this year after James Gunn’s “Superman” wraps filming.
One exciting piece of casting news is the breakout star of “House of the Dragon,” Milly Alcock, who will take on the titular role of Supergirl. Alcock won the role after a rigorous casting process, competing against other talented actors like Meg Donnelly, and impressing Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran during onscreen auditions.
Fans can expect a different and darker take on Supergirl in this film, as Gunn has hinted that this new iteration will be much more hardcore than previous interpretations, with a storyline involving a murderous quest for revenge. The film will follow Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog and meets a young woman named Ruthye along the way.
Gunn and Safran are on board as producers, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as executive producer and Ana Nogueira penning the screenplay. Gillespie’s impressive directing credits include “Cruella,” “The Finest Hours,” and “Lars and the Real Girl.” He is represented by CAA, Rumble Media, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
The news of Gillespie’s potential involvement in the “Supergirl” film was first reported by Deadline, generating excitement among fans of the superhero genre. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated project as it progresses towards production.
