Apple is revolutionizing the way new iPhone software is updated with its latest system, “Presto within Apple.” This cutting-edge technology will allow Apple Store employees in the United States to wirelessly update iPhone software while the phone is still in the box, using a pad-like device.
Set to roll out to all US Apple Stores by early summer, the system has been in testing at select stores since the end of 2023. This innovative system was first reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, with evidence of the feature found in iOS 17.2 by 9to5Mac.
The pad-like device used in the system can power on iPhones, update their software, and power them back down while they remain in their boxes. This advancement eliminates the need for customers to immediately update their new iPhones upon purchase, as the devices will already be updated by the Apple Store.
Currently, iPhones are shipped with the build of iOS available at the time, potentially leaving customers with outdated software. The new system will utilize wireless technologies like MagSafe to update iPhones without even opening the packaging.
