Guam News Factor- Little Island in the Hudson River to Feature Fourth Year of Vibrant Summer Programming
Little Island, the beloved 2.4-acre park in the Hudson River near West 14th Street, has exciting plans for its fourth year of free and low-cost summer programming. Organizers have put a focus on commissioning entirely new works for the main stage, a 700-seat amphitheater, where tickets will be priced at just $25.
Producing artistic director Zack Winokur has promised that audiences can look forward to all-new performances never seen before in the amphitheater. The season kicks off on June 1 with a world premiere work by renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp and composer T Bone Burnett. Throughout the season, there will be a total of nine world premieres, culminating in September with three weeks of performances of a new version of “The Marriage of Figaro” performed by countertenor opera diva Anthony Roth Costanzo.
In addition to ticketed events, there will also be free performances in the Glade area, which features lawn and bench seating for 200 people. The lineup for these free performances will be curated by different artists, including jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, singer-songwriter Gio Escobar, and others.
Other performances to look out for include a show about Paul Robeson, a new dance piece by choreographer Pam Tanowitz, and an adaptation of Henry Hoke’s novel “Open Throat.” Organizers have learned valuable lessons over the past four years on how to operate the space efficiently during a packed programming schedule.
Winokur expressed the privilege of being able to offer new work with low access level for people to experience the unique combination of nature and art at Little Island. This opportunity is truly unlike any other place, making it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
