FBI Investigates Threats Against Colorado Supreme Court Justices Following Removal of Trump from 2024 Ballot
The FBI is currently working with local law enforcement in Colorado after serious threats were made against state Supreme Court justices who ruled to remove former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential ballot. Law enforcement agencies are treating these threats as a matter of utmost importance, launching investigations to thwart any potential violence.
In response to the threats, both the Colorado Judicial Branch and the Colorado State Patrol have joined forces to protect the justices. The Denver Police Department recently responded to a report of a potential threat at the residence of one of the justices. However, upon investigation, no concrete evidence of an impending danger was found, suggesting the potential threat might have been a hoax.
Efforts to identify potential indicators of real threats towards public officials have been initiated by state and local law enforcement officials, as well as non-government research groups. Extremist online forums have been closely monitored, revealing inflammatory posts that specifically targeted the Colorado Supreme Court justices. Some individuals even called for the exposure of personal information. However, no explicit threats were detected.
Certain far-right, pro-Trump websites have also displayed violent language towards the justices. Nevertheless, no solid plans to carry out these threats have been uncovered. It should be noted that the ruling to disqualify Trump from the Colorado ballot was based on the “insurrectionist ban” outlined in the 14th Amendment.
This alarming trend of threats against public officials is not unique to Colorado. CNN has previously reported on the surge of threats aimed at individuals involved in various high-profile cases. Some examples include those involved in the failed effort to award Representative Jim Jordan the House speakership and Representative Ilhan Omar following the Hamas-Israel conflict.
Law enforcement remains cautious about online rhetoric potentially manifesting as real-world violence. The concern stems from the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, which highlighted the dangers of online extremism turning into physical attacks. Authorities are committed to preventing future incidents and ensuring the safety of public officials.
