Japan to Double Defense Spending in Response to Growing Security Challenges
Japan has revealed plans to significantly increase its defense spending over the next five years, more than doubling the amount spent in the previous five-year period. The country’s latest defense whitepaper outlines a projection of $309.75 billion in defense spending between fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2028, compared to $122.48 billion between fiscal 2019 and fiscal 2023.
A substantial portion of the increased spending, approximately $35.62 billion, will be allocated towards acquiring standoff defense capabilities that Japan has recently initiated. Standoff defense efforts involve acquiring air-launched standoff land-attack missiles, extending the range of ground-launched anti-ship missiles, and developing hypersonic weapons.
In addition, Japan is set to allocate $21.37 billion in funding towards integrated air and missile defense systems, aiming to counter opposing forces from a safe distance without being vulnerable to attack. This investment will primarily be utilized for two Aegis system-equipped vessels, featuring Lockheed Martin-made SPY-7 radars.
Recognizing the importance of sustainability and resiliency, Japan will also heavily invest in these areas, increasing funding from $42.73 billion to $106.8 billion. This commitment reflects Japan’s determination to ensure its defense capabilities remain robust in the face of evolving security challenges.
Furthermore, increased investment from $21.4 billion to $56.9 billion will be directed towards cross-domain capabilities, as Japan continues to integrate its self-defense forces. This move aims to enhance the country’s ability to respond effectively across different military domains.
Highlighting the changing nature of airborne threats, the whitepaper emphasizes the growing diversity and complexity of such challenges. These include hypersonic missiles flying at low altitudes and unpredictable trajectories. Japan’s response to these concerns necessitates reinforcing its defense capabilities in response to the evolving capabilities of its adversaries and new forms of warfare.
Japan’s decision to double its defense spending underscores the country’s determination to protect its national security and maintain peace and stability in the region. By investing in state-of-the-art defense technologies and bolstering its military capabilities, Japan aims to meet the increasing security demands it faces in its most challenging and complex security environment since World War II.
