Actress Ms. Love and her team recently made headlines with their decision to opt for a champagne-colored carpet for the upcoming academy events, bucking the trend of the traditional red carpet that has been a staple at award ceremonies for over six decades.
The 50,000-square-foot rug was initially set to be chocolate brown before inspiration struck while watching the sunset on a white-sand beach, leading to the choice of the calming and peaceful champagne color. However, Ms. Love acknowledged that maintaining the light-colored carpet could pose a challenge, especially in the event of heavy rain.
The shift towards colorful carpets at premieres, galas, and award ceremonies has been gaining momentum, with notable examples including the gray carpet at the Emmys and the pink carpet at the world premiere of “Barbie” in Los Angeles. This departure from the traditional red carpet dates back to 1922 when showman Sid Grauman first introduced the concept for the premiere of “Robin Hood” at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.
The Oscars later adopted the red carpet tradition in 1961, using a special shade known as Academy Red that has since become iconic in photos from the event. With the rise of colorful carpets in Hollywood, it seems that the champagne carpet at the academy events may just be the beginning of a new trend in the world of entertainment.
